From an early age, I’ve been involved in making clothes. I sat for hours next to my mum, cleaning out her sewing basket, until I craved more and started making clothes on my own.

With my mother's help and using patterns from Knip (a Dutch magazine) or Burda, I started making dresses for my Barbie dolls. But soon, I started sewing clothes for myself too. So, after high school, I chose to learn how to make 'real' patterns for my own designs. At St.-Agnes and St.-Maria, I mastered all the tricks of the trade. Meanwhile, it was my turn to pass on my knowledge and skills to mum, because 'basting and tailor's tacking are old school, after all!' 😊

Much of what hangs in my closet today comes from under my sewing machine. At home, I’m always working on something, or something is 'maturing.' A new piece of clothing, patterns for something new, knitting, crochet... something I can fiddle with. Sometimes, the pieces end up in every corner of the room because they don’t work out, or they get set aside while another idea takes priority.

And so, it gradually began to itch to start something for myself: in late 2020, Atelier Leontine was born, an amalgamation of Leon (my grandfather, who was a tailor) and my first name, Tine.

Now, you might be wondering why I chose gloves.

For me, gloves are the perfect thing to tinker with:

  • Small – a normal glove can fit on one A4 sheet of paper.

  • Technical – because it has to fit.

  • Creative – because it has a lot of limitations; you have to be creative to still be innovative.

  • Lots of pieces – read: lots of pins or handiwork... so really tinkering to get it together.

  • Details – 'The details make it rich.'

In short, Atelier Leontine is a true reflection of me.

It’s a place where you can find both patterns and made-to-order gloves. (Sorry, made-to-order is only available in the Benelux.)

So, how does a glove from Atelier Leontine come to life?

All patterns are first worked out by hand on paper—cutting, gluing, letting them mature, and trying again. Once satisfied, they are drawn in a CAD program. Finally, they are worked out in fabric until they are absolutely perfect.

A cup of tea, some good music (be sure to listen to my favorite Spotify playlist – [link]), and I’m in zen mode. That state of flow comes in handy when making the work descriptions. I clearly formulate everything step by step, with detailed drawings, because after all, everyone should be able to understand it just by looking at the pictures. Then, I take some Insta-worthy pictures, and a new model is born.

I hope there's a model for you, and that you’ll choose one from Atelier Leontine for your next pair of gloves. “Because your clothes are your inside on the outside, and you shouldn’t leave that to the big brands!”

A great quote to end with, which I recently saw in a Netflix series, and which totally fits Atelier Leontine!
